Pufi / Jakob Leben & Robertina Sebjanic

Researching art project “Pufi” is an audio-sculptural interactive installation containing several independent entities, joints of computer components and sculptural frameworks. An entity is named a Pufi; this toy-like name calls for it to be treated as a toy, meaning that we wish the audience to establish a rather personal relationship with it. The computer part of the entities allows for programmed artificial intelligence giving each entity its specific personality, while the sculptural framework constitutes each entity's specific visual form. The Pufis interact with audience by means of sonic responses to information about their environment, especially the presence and behaviour of audience, which they aquire via electronic sensors. Pufis are platforms for research of the nature of human–robot interaction in relation to robots' visual forms and types of personalities they exhibit. The key theme of interest is discovering the point within this interaction when robots cease to function as machines and start to function as the real Other. What are the properties a robot must have so that within its interaction with a human being the functions of responsibility, abuse, love, hate, etc. are established?
